FIRST LIGHT CHILDREN'S CARE

Comprehensive support for every child

We provide a structured and supportive approach to care, ensuring that every child receives personalised attention and the right resources for their development.

Our core offerings

Educational support

Helping children stay engaged in school, catch up on learning, and develop their potential. We believe that education is key to a bright future. Our team supports children in their learning journey by:

  • Helping with schoolwork and study sessions.

  • Providing tutoring and one-on-one educational support.

  • Encouraging confidence and a love for learning.

Therapeutic services

Many children in care have experienced challenges that impact their emotional well-being. Our therapeutic support helps children feel heard, understood, and supported through:

  • One-on-one emotional support and mentoring.

  • Access to counselling and therapeutic interventions.

  • Trauma-informed care that helps children heal and build resilience.

Medical care

Children’s health and well-being are our top priorities. We ensure each child receives:

  • Routine health check-ups and medical support.

  • Access to dental and vision care.

  • Emotional and mental health support to promote overall well-being.

Mental wellbeing

Providing therapeutic support, encouragement, and guidance to help children build confidence and resilience.

  • Daily Living Support. Teaching essential life skills, from personal care to preparing for independence.

  • Social Development. Encouraging friendships, teamwork, and positive interactions through group activities and structured programs.

  • Health and Well-being. Ensuring children receive proper nutrition, medical care, and support for a healthy lifestyle.

We follow a structured approach to ensure every child's placement is beneficial and supportive.

Pre-admission discussion

Before admitting a child into our care, we hold a comprehensive pre-admission meeting to evaluate if our home can meet their needs. This process involves carefully reviewing the child’s background, requirements, and any potential risks to ensure a safe and nurturing environment. We collaborate with social workers and relevant authorities to conduct an Impact Risk Assessment, focusing on the child’s best interests. The final decision is based on this evaluation, with the child’s well-being and stability as our primary concern. This approach ensures a safe and appropriate placement.

Placement meeting

We hold a Placement Meeting within 72 hours of a child’s arrival to ensure they are settling in well. During this meeting, we develop an Initial Care Plan tailored to their individual needs, addressing emotional well-being, education, and personal development. A dedicated key worker is assigned to provide personalised support, and the child receives a detailed guide explaining daily routines, activities, and available resources. If any immediate changes are needed, we work closely with social workers, the child, and their family to support a smooth transition.

Placement review

Around one month after admission, we carry out a formal Placement Review to assess the child’s well-being and progress. This review examines whether the current care plan effectively meets their needs, gathering input from the child, their key worker, and external professionals. If needed, modifications are made to therapeutic support, educational arrangements, or social integration strategies to promote continued development and stability.

Looked-after children review

We conduct ongoing assessments to ensure long-term stability and progress. A Looked-After Children Review is held at four weeks, three months, and every six months thereafter. These reviews provide a structured opportunity to assess the child’s development, address any emerging challenges, and update their care plan accordingly. We collaborate with social workers, guardians, and the child to ensure they feel supported and involved throughout their time with us. Our approach is proactive, flexible, and dedicated to achieving the best outcomes for each young person.
